Atay Ilgün & Daniel Vincent - Fragments of Sound

12, Nov, 2011

Those of you who have followed mrs.vee recordings over the years will recognise Atay as the leading light behind Svefn Plural and Treefingers.

Just like me, he’s always tinkering with some recordings and playing around with ideas.

A few weeks ago, I asked Atay over to the studio to chat about the projects he is working on, and whether there’s something we could work on together at some point. I was also considering creating an ambient/drone track for Freddy Palmer’s new tape-only label Tape Your Mouth, thinking that Atay would be a great collaborator.

When Atay arrived, I quickly introduced him to the equipment I had set up - Microkorg and Kawai K4 synths, Boss Phase Shifter, Akai Headrush delay unit and my beloved WEM Copicat - and we set to work making noise.

After a few minutes of confused drones and associated noise, we restarted, adding a Android drum machine app called Silicon Oxide to provide us with some kind of focal point.

The result was an interesting take on the mid-70s electronic/kosmische scene. Atay layered effects and sweeps with the Microkorg and pedals whilst I played a few chords and simple runs on the K4…

Leaving the electronic equipment for a while, we set up a microphone to record Atay’s acoustic guitar and plugged my electric guitar into the phase shifter and Headrush delay. The following recording captures Atay simply improvising whilst I attempt to provide some kind of ambient soundscape in the background…

We stopped for a break and recorded another improv returning to the drum machine which gave the recording a different musical personality… we were now being propelled by the gentle thud of a sampled bass drum into a strange place in space…
